Berkshire Hathaway, the multinational conglomerate led by Warren Buffett, has incrementally raised its ownership in two major Japanese trading corporations. The company's holdings in these entities have now surpassed double-digit percentages, indicating a sustained interest in the Japanese market. The investment firm, according to Seeking Alpha, has increased its stake in Mitsubishi Corp. to 10.04% and Mitsui & Co. to 10.96%. These adjustments reflect a continuation of Berkshire Hathaway's strategy to acquire significant positions in Japan's leading general trading companies, known as "sogo shosha." Previously, in August 2020, Berkshire Hathaway initially acquired 5% stakes in five of these large Japanese trading houses, including Itochu Corp., Marubeni Corp., and Sumitomo Corp., alongside Mitsubishi and Mitsui. At the time, Warren Buffett indicated that these investments were long-term holdings and that the company might increase its ownership up to 9.9% in any of them, depending on the price. Over time, Berkshire Hathaway has indeed gradually accumulated more shares in these companies. The consistent upward trend in their ownership percentages underscores a belief in the fundamental value and future prospects of these diverse businesses. Japanese trading houses are deeply integrated into various global industries, ranging from energy and metals to food and textiles, offering a broad exposure to international trade and economic activity. This recent announcement highlights the ongoing confidence of one of the world's most renowned investors in the resilience and potential of these particular Japanese conglomerates. The decision to deepen these investments suggests a positive outlook on their sustained performance and their role within the global economy.
