Shell, a prominent global energy company, has unveiled its financial performance for the initial quarter of the year, demonstrating a mixed set of outcomes across its diverse operational areas. According to Seeking Alpha, the company also furnished new projections for the upcoming second quarter and adjusted its long-term financial targets extending to the 2026 fiscal year.
The integrated gas sector experienced a sequential dip in adjusted earnings, recording $2.8 billion compared to $4.0 billion in the preceding quarter. This decrease was primarily attributed to reduced trading and optimization results, alongside lower liquified natural gas (LNG) prices. Despite this, the upstream segment saw a positive shift, with adjusted earnings climbing to $2.8 billion from $2.1 billion quarter-over-quarter. This improvement was largely driven by a more favorable tax environment and increased volumes, which counteracted the impact of lower oil and gas prices.
Renewables and energy solutions faced a notable decline, reporting an adjusted loss of $400 million, a stark contrast to the $200 million profit seen in the prior quarter. This downturn was influenced by changes in the valuation of European power derivatives and less favorable trading conditions. Conversely, chemicals and products improved its adjusted earnings, moving from a $300 million loss to a $200 million profit, benefiting from seasonal demand and enhanced trading activities.
Looking ahead, Shell anticipates a slight increase in integrated gas production for the second quarter of 2024, projecting figures between 930,000 and 970,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Upstream production is also expected to rise, estimated at 1,730,000 to 1,830,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The marketing segment is forecasted to achieve an adjusted earnings of approximately $700 million.
Capital expenditure guidance for 2024 remains unaltered, set between $22 billion and $25 billion. However, the company has updated its capital expenditure guidance for 2025 and 2026, narrowing the range to $22 billion to $25 billion annually, a slight revision from the previously stated $22 billion to $25 billion range for its new energy projects. This adjustment signals Shell's ongoing strategic focus and adaptive approach to market dynamics and investment priorities.
