A pair of real estate associated professionals have been handed prison sentences following their involvement in a $17 million Ponzi scheme, according to Inman. Robert Christensen, identified as an agent, received a sentence of four years and nine months in federal prison, while Anthony Matic, a loan officer, was given a three-year sentence. The scheme, which operated between 2016 and 2021, defrauded 18 investors out of a total of $17 million. Court documents reveal that Christensen admitted to fabricating documents to deceive investors. These falsified records included bank statements, promissory notes, and property deeds, all designed to create a misleading impression of legitimate investments. Investors were falsely assured that their capital would be directed towards ventures such as fix-and-flip real estate projects and the acquisition of properties at foreclosure auctions. However, the funds were instead channeled into the personal accounts of Christensen and Matic, funding an extravagant lifestyle. The misused money reportedly covered a wide array of personal indulgences. These included numerous trips to casinos, a membership to an exclusive whiskey club, and expenditures on massages and cryotherapy treatments. The extent of the personal spending highlighted the fraudulent nature of their operation. Upon their release from incarceration, both Christensen and Matic will face three years of supervised release. This period will involve stringent oversight of their activities to ensure compliance with the law and prevent further illicit conduct. Additionally, the court has mandated that both individuals pay restitution totaling $17 million to their victims. The case underscores the risks associated with certain investment opportunities and the importance of due diligence. Authorities recommend that potential investors thoroughly vet individuals and companies offering investment products, particularly those promising unusually high returns. The sentencing aims to provide a measure of justice for those who suffered financial losses due to the deceptive practices of Christensen and Matic.
