Following two consecutive Grand Prix races featuring rear wing failures on his Red Bull vehicle, Max Verstappen has expressed significant safety apprehensions. The reigning world champion characterized these mechanical issues as exceptionally perilous, according to comments reported by BBC Sport. Verstappen elaborated on both occurrences, which took place during practice sessions for the Las Vegas Grand Prix and the Qatar Grand Prix. In Las Vegas, the issue manifested as a failure of the DRS (Drag Reduction System) flap on his car's rear wing. This malfunction led to a loss of control, resulting in the car making contact with the circuit's barriers. Fortunately, the impact was not severe, and Verstappen was able to continue with minimal damage. The subsequent incident in Qatar presented a more critical situation. During a high-speed section of the track, the entire rear wing assembly detached from his vehicle. This complete component separation occurred at a velocity exceeding 290 kilometers per hour, creating a significantly heightened risk for the driver and potentially other competitors on the track. Verstappen highlighted the inherent dangers associated with such structural compromises at extreme speeds. He noted that while the Las Vegas mishap was a flap failure, the complete detachment witnessed in Qatar represented a far more serious engineering breakdown. He stressed that these types of mechanical failures could have dire consequences, especially considering the competitive nature and high speeds characteristic of Formula 1 racing. The Red Bull team has initiated comprehensive investigations into the root causes of these separate, yet concerning, incidents. Ensuring the structural integrity and reliable performance of all vehicle components is paramount for driver safety and sustained competitive performance. The sport's governing body, the FIA, also monitors such incidents closely to uphold safety standards across the grid.
