Multiple traffic officers in Nigeria have been taken into custody after they were accused of soliciting a bribe from the country's leading anti-corruption advocate, Musa Aliyu. The incident reportedly involved the officers stopping Mr. Aliyu at an unauthorized roadside checkpoint and instructing him to go to a cash machine.
According to BBC World, the events unfolded after the officers detained Mr. Aliyu’s driver, asserting that the vehicle’s papers were not in order. They then allegedly demanded a sum of 150,000 naira (approximately $100) from the anti-corruption chairman. When Mr. Aliyu identified himself and recorded parts of the encounter, the officers reportedly reduced their demand to 40,000 naira. This interaction was said to have occurred on a Tuesday evening in Abuja, Nigeria's capital.
Mr. Aliyu, who leads the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), confirmed the arrest of the officers involved in the alleged extortion attempt. He stated that the four officers are currently facing investigation. The ICPC chairman further elaborated that his intention behind reporting the incident was to send a clear message that such corrupt practices would not be tolerated, regardless of the perpetrator's position.
He emphasized the importance of upholding the law and ensuring that those who are meant to enforce it do not themselves engage in illegal activities. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission is a key agency in Nigeria's efforts to combat corruption across various sectors of public and private life. The incident has drawn attention to ongoing challenges in law enforcement and the broader fight against graft within the nation. The outcome of the investigation into the officers is keenly awaited, as it could signal further resolve in tackling institutional corruption.
