Apple has announced an increase in subscription fees for its music streaming service, Apple Music. This adjustment comes more than a year after its last price revision, which occurred in the autumn of 2022.
The technology giant states that the primary driver behind these elevated costs is a rise in music licensing expenses. According to Variety, these increased prices will impact numerous markets globally where Apple Music operates, including a significant change for customers in the United States.
For individual subscribers in the U.S., the monthly fee will now be $11.99, up from the previous $10.99. The family plan, which allows up to six users, will see its price rise to $18.99 per month, an increase from $16.99. Student plans are also affected, moving from $5.99 to $6.99 monthly. The annual individual subscription will now cost $119, an increase of $10 from its prior rate.
Variety also notes that Apple One bundles, which combine several Apple services like Apple Music, Apple TV+, and iCloud+, are also experiencing price hikes. The individual Apple One plan, previously $19.95, is now set at $22.95 per month. The family tier of Apple One has increased from $25.95 to $28.95 monthly, and the premier plan, offering the most comprehensive suite of services, has gone up from $37.95 to $39.95 per month.
The new pricing structure is effective immediately for new subscribers. Existing users will see the updated rates applied starting with their next billing cycle, beginning in December 2024. This widespread increase reflects a broader industry trend where content providers pass on rising operational costs to consumers.
Apple has previously justified similar price adjustments by emphasizing its commitment to paying artists and record labels appropriately for their work. The company has highlighted its dedication to supporting the music ecosystem, asserting that artists earn more from Apple Music than from many other streaming platforms.
