Action cinema icon Iko Uwais is preparing to star in an upcoming multi-generational family crime drama titled "Jakarta," Variety reports. The series is currently in development at Alcon Entertainment, known for its work on productions like "Blade Runner 2049" and "The Expanse." Veteran filmmaker Albert Hughes, celebrated for his contributions to "The Book of Eli" and "Alpha," will direct the initial episode and also serve as a producing director for the program.
The narrative for "Jakarta" is being crafted by Kirk Ward and Joshua W. Wagner, with Ward also taking on the role of showrunner for the series. This collaboration marks a reunion for Hughes and Ward, who previously partnered on the television adaptation of "The Continental: From the World of John Wick." Alcon Entertainment, an independent studio, holds the rights to the "Blade Runner" universe, and their recent projects include "Blade Runner 2049" and the animated series "Blade Runner: Black Lotus."
Uwais is widely recognized for his martial arts prowess and has gained international acclaim for his roles in films such as "The Raid" and its sequel, "The Raid 2," as well as "Mile 22" and "Stuber." His involvement in "Jakarta" signals a significant move into episodic television leadership for the actor. Albert Hughes, alongside his brother Allen Hughes, has a distinguished career, directing acclaimed features like "Menace II Society" and "Dead Presidents" before venturing into solo projects.
Alcon Television Group's co-CEOs, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, are set to executive produce the series alongside Ben Roberts. Roy Lee, of Vertigo Entertainment, is also on board as an executive producer. Additionally, Mike Gabrawy and Marcei A. Brown will serve as executive producers through their company, Starlight Media. Ward, Wagner, Hughes, and Uwais will all hold executive producer credits, ensuring a collaborative vision for the ambitious new series.
The production promises a compelling exploration of familial bonds intertwined with the complexities of organized crime, set against an unspecified backdrop that draws on the show's namesake. With a strong creative team and a charismatic lead actor, "Jakarta" is poised to become a notable addition to the crime drama landscape.
